The Union for International Cancer Control

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is the largest and oldest membership organisation dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer worldwide. The UICC website serves as an important communication and knowledge sharing hub, which presents all UICC activities and services to its members, creating awareness and fostering collaboration across the cancer community. 1xINTERNET was keen to assist UICC in their mission to create a solution that would facilitate access to content through an exceptional user experience.

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is the world’s largest and oldest membership organisation dedicated to global cancer control across the continuum of cancer care, from prevention to early detection, treatment and care and palliative care. This international NGO, founded in 1933 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, has over 1,150 members and 58 partners in 172 countries and territories. It collaborates with governments and international organisations to promote greater equity, and ensure that cancer control (cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and supportive care) is a priority in the world health and development agenda. UICC's efforts encompass a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving cancer control worldwide.

The goal of UICC is to raise awareness of the fight against cancer and unite the cancer community; the UICC website aims to support these goals by increasing visibility, engaging visitors and facilitating access to resources. The existing website faced significant challenges in terms of layout and UX design which was hindering access to important content and resources. Additionally, there were difficulties in establishing connections between users and member organisations. Recognizing these issues, UICC sought a solution that would improve the user experience to facilitate access to vital information.

The old website was running on Drupal 7, an outdated system that had reached end of life and no longer supported the evolving needs of UICC. Understanding the importance of staying current and maintaining functionality, UICC sought a reliable partner to facilitate the smooth migration from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9. UICC wanted to integrate with their new CRM (Microsoft Dynamics) in order to streamline their processes and enhance data management.

Content Accessibility 

The main priority for UICC was to improve access to crucial information for users. The 1xINTERNET design team delivered a fresh UX/UI concept and design, which improved navigation, made vital information accessible to the worldwide audience. Leveraging the power of ElasticSearch, we seamlessly implemented a solution that allows users to explore a wide range of content effortlessly.

Smooth migration to Drupal 9

We carried out a seamless migration from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9, taking the opportunity to better structure content to enable optimal website performance. We provided an improved editorial experience, maintaining editing flexibility and ensuring editors can easily update the website and its news sections, enabling them to post informative and engaging content.

Engaging interactive functionality 

We implemented an interactive “Map of Members” where users can search member organisations across the globe using a visually engaging map tool. Presenting information in a playful, visually attractive and interactive way encourages at the same time as providing access to relevant content. 

Seamless integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 

We integrated the Drupal CMS with Microsoft Dynamics CRM which facilitated operations for UICC. Now, they can conveniently update their CRM and changes are automatically reflected in Drupal. This efficient synchronisation allows them to effectively manage their relationship with member organisations while effortlessly updating vital information on the website. The interactive map dynamically presents these updates, allowing users to explore member organisations worldwide. This powerful integration not only enhances UICC's ability to track and manage data but also ensures a dynamic experience for users.

SEO optimised

Through the application of a comprehensive SEO optimisation strategy we were able to preserve existing rankings through the migration and boost performance.  Adhering to SEO best practices we integrated an advanced tracking system that allowed us to gain insights into user behaviour and engagement, enabling us to make informed improvements and enhancements. These efforts led to better performance and a growth in rankings, maximising UICC’s online presence.

Why was Drupal a good fit for this project?

UICC were already using Drupal and were satisfied with its capabilities, it made sense to continue leveraging its strengths by upgrading to the latest version. Security is paramount for an important website like UICC and Drupal's secure and scalable framework, coupled with its content organisation and editorial capabilities allows for the handling of increasing traffic and content demands.
